LEWIS GINTER BOTANICAL GARDENS
What a great place to take kids! If you have arrived in Richmond, definitely make time to swing by the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden! A must see !! Their grounds are absolutely a children’s (and adult’s) playground ! See nature, exotic and native, come alive ! Here area few highlights, I’m looking forward to heading back when I get off the plane in Richmond and then drive to my parent’s home in Charlottesville, VA. Its a new ritual! Also, these photos are much different than my ones in the past because I am playing around with editing and trying to make them look like film, just having fun!
Being from Texas, we have a few cacti, I was excited to see cactus that grows as a perennial here in New England makes me feel at home! Here is some ‘Eastern Prickly Pear’ also known as ‘Optunia humifusa’ they get beautiful Yellow flowers – see below ( I am going out on a limb here and identifying a specific species, I apologize if I am incorrect)! I believe there are other varieties and recall that the New England Wild Flower Society has a garden area dedicated to different cactuses grown here in New England – not to mention they have TONS of other amazing things! Pack a sandwich & visit the New England Wild Flower Society (NEWFS) to enjoy your summer, they have lots of educational programs and their trails are marked beautifully so you know what you’re viewing !
Drumlin Farm is worth a visit! They provide interest year round and have tons of animals! These are just a few sneak peak photos of what the farm has to offer! Don’t miss the raptors in their cages, the pigs, birds, the beautiful vegetable gardens, ponies, cows, and great staff!
They offer tons of interesting classes in their cozy education building, and miles of hiking trails !
This farm is full of fun and laughter ! My husband and I had a great time walking the trails and enjoying the fresh, autumn air !
